In searching for a new home, buyers often rule out the idea of having a primary bedroom upstairs as they look to age in place. However, we may not be doing ourselves a favor by purchasing a home with the primary on the main floor. Here are three reasons why older buyers should not purchase homes with the primary bedroom downstairs.
- Safety – According to CPI Security, burglars set the bedroom as the first destination in 75% of break ins. Over 50% of break ins start at the front or back door. Having a master or on the second floor makes a homeowner less vulnerable to an attack.
- Floor plan design – Having the master upstairs gives you more room on the first floor to entertain guests at parties and gives you more privacy than having your bedroom on the main floor.
- Healthy Aging – As we get older, we think we want to avoid stairs but the reality is we should climb as long as we can. According to AARP, seniors who continue to climb stairs have a 39% lower risk of death from heart disease and 24% less risk of death from any cause. Studies also show that climbing stairs can reduce your cholesterol and your risk of type 2 diabetes.
As we get older, our needs change and so our homes do too. However, don’t be so sure that a home with the primary bedroom downstairs is right for you. Contact our sales agents to see what kind of floor plan works for you.
